Christmas Party 2019
Our Christmas party night was very good. The food was delicious. The competition "A Christmas Pudding in any medium" produced some clever entries. The raffle had some lovely prizes. The arrangement done by Jenny F was beautiful.
"Chocolate Unwrapped"-October meeting
Tracey Akehurst told us about the history of chocolate. It goes back a long time. The Aztecs made a bitter drink from the cacao seeds, nothing like the hot chocolate you enjoy with whipped cream and marsh mallows!
Tracey showed us a slide which described chocolate as " A divine drink which builds up resistance and fights fatigue. A cup of this precious drink enables a man to walk for a whole day without food".
At the end of the talk some chocolate pieces were passed round. These were quite dark chocolate but had some sweetness when eaten after trying 100% cocoa.

The November 2018 meeting
We had a talk by Diana Wright. She started by saying that laughter was a great gift. She stated that she didn't like smut but her first amusing poem was about a lady who thought she a mouse had run up her skirt and found that it was the vicar's hand!
Helen Rose brought the "WI Shop" to the meeting and manned it single handed. There was plenty of interest, I hope there were plenty of purchases made.
Thanks to members for bringing in lots of toys and presents for older children for our Christmas collection.
Helen had made out a list of possible meetings for next year's programme. Thanks to those of you who found time to tick off those you were most interested in.
Resolution voting forms are in November's WI Life.

January Meeting 2️⃣0️⃣1️⃣9️⃣Our first meeting of 2019 is a talk on Nottingham suffragists and suffragettes. Hopefully the difference will be explained on the night.
We are also holding a Bring and Buy sale so please bring along any suitable items. New or very good condition. Did you have any duplicate Christmas presents that need a new forever home? Subscriptions are due this month as well. Full membership is £42.00. Dual membership is £20.50. 🎄🎁🎄🎁Christmas Party🎄🎁🎄🎁19th December 2018Our Christmas Party was enjoyed by the members. The food provided by members (shared supper) was lovely.
We sang Jerusalem at the beginning of the meeting. This was at the request of one of our members in the suggestion box. We will probably sing it again at other meetings but not necessarily at every meeting. There were 3 quizzes on the tables with prizes for those with the highest marks and those with the lowest. The competition for the prettiest parcel was won by Heather. The voting was close- there were some very good entries. The raffle table looked very nice. The table decorations were done by Jenny F and were very pretty. We are looking forward to 2019 and more good times with your WI. The November 2018 meetingWe had a talk by Diana Wright. Sad news-Helen Beardshaw has died aged 95Helen was one of our oldest members. Her funeral was held at Mansfield Crematorium on Monday 8th October. the Chapel was full and there were many WI members present. Money was collected in aid of the Samaritans. Helen worked for the Samaritans for 40 years and received an MBE. A further collection at the WI was made and a further £24.00 was sent to the charity.
Hanwell's Vineyard tour and wine tasting-July 2018Here are some photos of this outing-but where is the wine????
Summer Walk- July 2018We have had our first walk which has doubled upon as our annual Summer Walk. We met at the Plough in Farnsfield and walked across the countryside. The weather was very warm and dry. A complete contrast to last year's walk when we got very wet.
We enjoyed a meal at the Plough after our walk. The walk was further than we had planned due to an unforeseen item on the route! 🐂 17th January Members Meeting Our speaker Malcolm Darroch told us about the daring Dolly Shepherd, balloonist, parachutist and stunt performer.
Several of her dare devil stunts made us hold our breath. Fortunately she had a premonition and gave up parachuting before it was too late. She died in 1983 aged 96! Thanks to those who brought items for the bring and buy in aid of the ACWW Guatemala project. Our summer walk this year was around Lowdham. It was a different route from last year. The walk was led by Kath, who had been round before we went with her husband to beat down nettles and make it easier for us to negotiate. The rain we had just before we went had turned some of the areas where the cattle walk into mud baths. It rained hard while we were out and at one point we looked like drowned rats. luckily we had all taken macs of some sort. The sun came out just as we got back to the Magna Charta. A quick change of shoes and wet clothes and the group looked a different set job ladies when we went into the pub for a very nice meal.
Join this scheme to help us swell our funds. It is easy just type easyfundraising into your browser.
See link below. Silent Auction- January meetingThere were lots of bargains to be had at the Silent Auction. Only the bidding was silent- there was plenty of chatting going on between members. "Both Sides of the Bench-Tales from a Magistrate"

Joyce gave us a lively talk, in September, on how the WI Markets had started and how they are now no longer in existence but have morphed into Country Markets.
The Ravenshead Swingband were also in The Centre having a practice session! Joyce was completely unphased and managed to compete with the beat. Luckily, she was a teacher in the past. Joyce brought a lovely selection of Market items for us to browse and buy. If you want to find out more about them and find one near you then go to the Country Markets website. Our nearest markets are at Mansfield, Southwell and Newark. |

Annual Meeting 2016
We held our Annual meeting on 16th March. Pat explained the bye laws and how they are created.
Joyce, treasurer, explained the accounts. We may need to do some fund raising this year so that we live within our income. The financial report was adopted by the members.
Janet read the committee annual report accompanied by a slide show of some of the highlights of the year. The members voted to adopt the report.
There were no new committee members proposed. The existing committee were willing to stand again so there were no changes. Janet proposed Moira as President, all agreed.
Pat thanked Moira for her hard work as President over the past year and presented her with some chocolates and flowers.
After the meeting we enjoyed some social time with drinks and nibbles.

Poppies for Hope and Care- Peter Hopkins
18th February 2016
The support activities are far more wide ranging than most of us realised. They include support for beneficiaries in financial difficulties; support for compensation and pensions etc.; dementia care homes; family breaks-both seaside and adventures; donations to research projects and campaigns.
Unfortunately membership is falling off- now 280,00 but Facebook fans number 2 million. Very useful to get news spread widely and fast. One thing that they are not allowed to spend money on, rather surprisingly, is memorials. These are down to councils to fund. Peter was thanked for an interesting and informative talk by Meg. |
January Bird Quiz
6th Feb 2016
Our January meeting was later in the month than usual. We had a "Bird Related Quiz" organised by Janice. There were lots of objects on a table and around the room and some were being worn by members of the committee. Alison had braces with 3 different bird pictures. Pat had robin earrings.
Some of the clues were a little more obscure. Can you guess the bird from the clue in the picture? There are at least 2 answers!! Check out the socks as well.
Prizes included Kiwi fruit, Penguin biscuits and real eggs-hens, duck and bantams

Candles, Quotes & Girl Talk - Maggie Allen
7th October 2015
This was our July meeting. The "Candles" part of the talk had to be edited out (elf & safety?). So we had a mixed bag of content to this talk with a quiz running through it. The winner was given "Smarties"!
The talk was given before the business part of the meeting as the speaker was a little under the weather. We decided to try this format for a few meetings and see it we prefer it. There are pros and cons whichever way we do it. We will see how it goes.

50th Birthday Party
18th June 2015
On 17th June we had a party to celebrate our 50th Birthday. We still have at least one of the founder members in our WI. Our guests of honour were Jane Jefferson, Chairman of Notts Federation and Pam Stoddart. As usual the food was delicious and several members went for second helpings. Our guests judged the competition. The subject was anything "Golden". There were some beautiful craft entries but the winner was "Nature's Liquid Gold" a jar of local honey. Meg designed a quiz for us to have some fun with. She said there was a theme but did not give it away. It was R.A.V.E.N.S.H.E.A.D.W.I.F.I.F.T.Y.Y.E.A.R.S. as the first letters of the answers. Cracking this code gave a clue to some missing answers. Pat Tootell and her team got all 22 answers correct! Well done.

April Meeting
20th May 2015
This was the first meeting back in the rebuilt hall. Now called "The Centre @ St Peter's". We only used one of the 3 rooms and concluded that we needed 2 joining rooms so that we can serve refreshments in the same room and give members a chance to read the notices etc.
Moira welcomed our speaker, Chris Weir who talked on “Secrets, mysteries and curiosities”. There was quite a mixture of vignettes from umbrellas to skeletons under Cockney Church. The slides were projected onto the super new remotely controlled screen. Part of the hi tech equipment that is in the centre.

Annual Federation Meeting, 25th March 2015
26th March 2015
Ten of our members attended the Annual Federation Meeting-which used to be called the Council Meeting (or even the Spring Council Meeting). Pat was our representative and she will be giving us a report shortly.
After a slightly controversial request the flowers for the stage were done by Jenny Fleming and Cherry Smith.
Pat received a certificate to commemorate our 50th Anniversary
Our members had lunch together in town.
Hopefully more will be added when Pat's report is completed.

Latest Craft Project
26th March 2015
Notts Fed sent us out a piece of fabric and asked that it be transformed into a pennant with the name of our WI. Our routine, since the birth of our craft group, is to pass such projects on to our Crafty Members for execution.
The craft group have come up trumps again and 'our' pennant was displayed and admired at our March meeting.
Pennants from all the WI's will be made into bunting for use at various events.

13th April 2015
To mark our 50th Anniversary the members were presented with a commemorative bookmark at the Annual Meeting.
Ravenshead WI Annual Meeting- 18th March 2015
20th March 2015
Our March meeting was our Annual Meeting. It was also the 50th Anniversary of our inauguration. Marjorie, one of the founder members, was at the meeting. We had our usual business meeting and then the Annual Meeting. We had some changes in our bye laws-led by Pat. These were mostly technical matters and were all passed unanimously. A new committee was also voted in. The members of the old committee were all willing to stand again together with a newly proposed member- Janice. This brings the number to 12 which is our maximum number. No ballot was needed. The secretary, Janet, proposed Moira to be our President. This was passed unanimously. The other officers will be decided on at the first meeting of the new committee.
A vote of thanks to Peter, the caretaker at Centre Point, was proposed and he was given a gift token. He has been exceptionally helpful during our time at the Centre. This was our last meeting at this venue.
We move back to The Centre @ St Peter's for our April meeting. The hall has been rebuilt and renamed.
The meetings were followed by nibbles and sparkling (non-alcoholic) wine. Our members enjoyed a leisurely chat with their snacks.

February Meeting
10th March 2015
We had to have a change of plan for the February meeting as Jenny Bailey, our speaker, was not well enough to come.
There was a lot of business to catch up on as we had missed the January meeting and December was our party. Meg stepped in with a gardening quiz. More difficult than it looked!
Our best wishes to Jenny for a speedy recovery. Jenny wears many hats at Notts Federation so she is normally a very busy lady.

New Centre is nearly ready
16th February, 2015
Some of the committee were invited to look round the new Centre recently. We were very impressed and have booked our meetings for the next year. We hope that our April meeting will be our first in the new St Peter's Centre.
Existing users are to be the first to use the new facilities but it is hoped that soon new users will be booking the up to date centre.

Meeting Cancelled. It looks pretty but...
15th February 2015
Sadly our January meeting had to be cancelled due to snow. The village bus contacted us to say that roads were so bad the bus could not continue to run. It was decided that it was not sensible to expect members to go out and add to potential traffic problems.
The speaker has been rebooked for a later meeting.
